This paid eight-week internship offers first-year university students (or second-year university students on a four year course) experience in two of HSBC’s global businesses: Retail Banking and Wealth Management, and Commercial Banking. It will provide an insight as to where your long-term future may lie in the world of international banking.

What to expect

Your eight weeks on this internship will be divided between two global businesses within HSBC. This will allow you to gain an understanding of how we operate, and develop the key skills to deliver the first-class experience our personal and commercial customers expect. You’ll also be able to see the career development opportunities available to you at HSBC.

In Retail Banking and Wealth Management, there are a number of different areas you could go into, including our branch network, our contact centres (including first direct), M&S Bank, our product development areas or wealth management (Premier Banking). Whichever team you join, your placement will provide you with an understanding of our customers, products and processes.

Your second rotation in Commercial Banking is designed to give you an understanding of how we manage business customer relationships. This could be in our Business Banking or Commercial Banking centres, where you’ll support our relationship managers or product teams.

Throughout the internship, you will also work in a team with other interns to deliver a charity project. We will support, guide and help develop you, while our leaders will help you to be the best you can be, reflecting your interests and capabilities.

Learning, development and support

We’re looking for students who have a keen interest in banking and in contributing to the long-term growth and sustainability of our Retail Banking and Wealth Management, and Commercial Banking businesses. Forward-thinking, driven, perceptive students who enjoy being part of a team and are excited by new ideas. People who are dependable and open to different cultures.

Our First-Year Internship will provide you with an insight into what it’s like to work for a global bank. Your time with us will begin with a thorough induction to bring you up to speed and to help you get comfortable in your new work environment. You will take on a project within the two businesses, gaining practical, on-the-job training.

There will be plenty of people who can help ensure you get the most out of the internship. Your line manager will help you to evaluate your career options. You’ll be assigned a mentor and buddy, who you can share ideas with and call on for advice. There will be plenty of opportunities to develop your own network, which will prove to be invaluable in the future. There will also be the opportunity to take part in sustainability initiatives, which will help you to develop new relationships and skills and possibly become a future leader of HSBC, while adding value to the communities in which we work.

Potential career paths

The internship is the beginning of an exciting journey that could take you to the highest levels in international banking. The next stage of the journey will be to complete the Retail Banking and Wealth Management Internship or the Commercial Banking Internship in your penultimate year of study. This would then be followed by the Retail Banking and Wealth Management Global Graduate Programme or the Commercial Banking Global Graduate Programme on graduating from university.

What you’ll need

To be considered for the internship, you will be a student who:

  • Is in the first year of a three-year degree course; or a second-year student on a four-year degree course (any discipline is acceptable)
  • Is on track to achieve a minimum upper second-class degree and 300 UCAS points (excluding General Studies)
  • Demonstrates our values – open, dependable and connected – in your daily work
  • Is curious about international finance
  • Has a global outlook
  • Is willing to progress onto the Retail Banking and Wealth Management Internship or Commercial Banking Internship in your penultimate year of study

Benefits
