Our two-year China Returns Programme provides final year students and graduates who are Chinese nationals with experience across a number of areas within Commercial Banking in the UK. This will build up your generalist product and client experience, enabling you to develop a long-term international career in China.

What to expect

As the leading international bank in China, HSBC is focusing on the opportunities arising from both existing and emerging trade corridors between the mainland and other key markets such as Hong Kong, the wider Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Our new and exciting programme is for talented final year students and recent graduates who are Chinese nationals and have a strong interest and desire to gain experience in the UK before relocating to China to continue their career after the programme concludes.

During your time on the programme you’ll complete a number of rotations designed to give you the widest exposure to Commercial Banking, including a rotation in China.

You’ll discover the art of connecting with customers and how to understand – and meet – their bespoke needs. Your rotation into products such as Global Trade and Receivables Finance will introduce you to the services and financing we provide to enable importers and exporters to navigate the trade cycle. You’ll also complete a rotation in Risk and spend three months in China focusing on a project to broaden your strategic and risk understanding.

We always have your future in mind. During your time in the UK, you’ll keep in close contact with the China team through online sessions and networking opportunities to build your understanding of the business environment in the UK and China. Throughout the programme, we will support, guide and develop you, while our leaders will help you to be the best you can be, reflecting your interests and capabilities.

Learning, development and support

We’re looking for the future leaders of Commercial Banking. Forward-thinking, driven, perceptive students and graduates who enjoy being part of a team and are excited by new ideas. People who are dependable and open to different cultures.

A graduate induction and overview of Commercial Banking will provide the ideal start to your HSBC career and we’ll give you any technical training you need to get up to speed. As you move through your rotations, a combination of on-the-job training and formal development, aligned to our Commercial Banking Academy, will give you a solid foundation of business knowledge. As a forward-thinking, motivated individual, you will shape your own development, which includes the opportunity to study for relevant local or global professional qualifications. Set objectives and learning outcomes are defined in each rotation for robust development and progress tracking. These are reviewed mid-rotation and on completion of each six months.

While there are plenty of learning tools in place, you’ll benefit most from the people around you. You’ll have the support of your senior manager mentor who can guide your progress, and a buddy who you can go to for advice and share ideas with. You’ll be sitting alongside some of the most talented people in the industry, who will be keen to pass on their knowledge. We’ll also encourage you to build a network of contacts, both in the UK and China. Taking part in sustainability initiatives is also a great way to grow personally and possibly become a leader of HSBC, while adding value to the communities in which we work.

Potential career paths

The China Returns Programme commences in August 2016 and is the beginning of an exciting journey that could take you to the highest levels at HSBC.

On completion of the programme, you can take on a range of roles across Commercial Banking. These could be within product or in a client-facing role, with a view to progressing into senior management. Your first post-programme role will take into account specific business needs in China and your strengths and skills.

What you’ll need

To be considered for this programme you will be a Chinese national in your final year at a university (or recent graduate) in the United Kingdom, who:

  • Demonstrates our values – open, dependable and connected – in your daily work
  • Has a genuine interest in the Commercial Banking sector
  • Is internationally mobile and eligible to work in China in a permanent role, on a long-term basis
  • Is a team player and a clear communicator
  • Is empathetic to clients’ needs
  • Is numerate and analytical
  • Is proactive and innovative
  • Has the highest standards of behaviour
  • Is fluent in business English and Mandarin

Benefits

We offer a comprehensive, market-competitive pay and benefits package according to your role and location, along with flexible ways of working to help you achieve the best possible work-life balance.
