Education needed

Looking at this sector in more detail, qualifications and experience needed may vary, especially depending on what profession you intend to become part of. However, generally speaking you will need the following:

  • Minimum of three GCSE passes or the equivalent
  • Maths and English are an essential
  • Science-related A-levels
  • Engineering or applied science degree subject
  • Those with other degrees will most likely be restricted to the commercial side of the business.

If you are hoping to be an engineer or technician it is likely you will need to be professionally registered with the Engineering Council, Society for the Environment or the Science Council. In order to do this you will need to register with one of the affiliated professional membership bodies such as the Energy Institute and fulfil their criteria.

Environmental professionals

For those interested in working in the environmental side of this sector, 90% will have a first degree whilst 40% have a masters and 11% have a PhD. Further qualifications completed whilst working are also common, 50% of those asked are Chartered Environmentalists (CEnv) or Chartered Engineers (CEng).
