The Chartered Institute of Marketing is the professional international body for marketers. First established in 1911, it has a worldwide network of over 41,000 members. The Institute exists to develop the marketing profession, maintain professional standards and improve the skills of marketing practitioners, enabling them to deliver exceptional results for their organisations. It does this by providing membership, qualifications and training to marketing professionals and businesses around the world.

Why marketing?

Marketing is one of the most dynamic, constantly changing professions in the business world. It encompasses a wide range of activities and skills – from number crunching and analysis to innovation and creativity. Exciting and challenging, it offers graduates a range of careers at the heart of business. Marketing develops such a wide range of skills across all business areas that it’s a great place to start your career – even if you’re not sure exactly what you want to do in the longer term.

Current marketing issues and trends

As digital marketing becomes increasingly important as a means of communicating with and building relationships with customers, those with skills in this area will increasingly be sought after by employers.

With corporate social responsibility, sustainability, and the move towards an increasingly regulated arena, employers will also be looking for responsible and professional marketers who keep up to date with the latest issues in marketing.

Marketers who are able to work across sectors and embrace new ways of communicating, while making sound moral and professional decisions, will be the ones who make it to the top in the next ten years.

What are the benefits of joining?

Being a member of The Chartered Institute of Marketing will help you stand out from the crowd no matter where you are in your career. With over 100 years of experience, the Institute can help you develop the latest skills, get industry-relevant qualifications, learn more about marketing and join the world’s biggest community of professional marketers.

The Institute offers a comprehensive range of qualifications which are recognised and appreciated across the marketing industry – and these qualifications are becoming increasingly valuable as employers look for candidates who can prove their experience and ability to do the job.

Members can also take advantage of the marketing, sales and business training courses on offer to help build the skills to improve their performance. Informed by the latest thinking in learning and development, the Institute’s training courses are designed to meet the needs of employers.

The various regions and groups which are a part of the Institute also offer events and training which allow marketers to keep up with the latest trends in the industry and network with others.

Finally, membership of the Institute brings proven financial benefits – research has shown that, on average, CIM members earn £500 to £1,000 more than their non-affiliated colleagues (Marketing Rewards Survey 2011).
