Despite a recorded rise in UK job vacancies, opportunities at graduate level have grown fiercer over the last year.

A new study reported a total of over 770,000 advertised job vacancies in November, representing a 13% increase on the previous year.

This equates to just 1.59 jobseekers per vacancy, down from 2.36 in January 2013.

However, the surge in overall job vacancies was offset by a 15% decline in graduate jobs through 2013.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, commented on the difficulties for graduate job hunters: ‘Despite signs of a wider job market recovery, the situation remains tough for those who are fresh out of university. Many graduates are being forced to take on lower-skilled jobs and face growing competition for each available role.’
