HM Revenue and Customs (HRMC) is targeting 200 employers who are advertising student and graduate internships, to ensure that they are paying the minimum wage.

There is increasing concern that employers are using unpaid interns as cheap labour. Unpaid interships are prevalent in certain sectors, for example the Unite union suggests that more than a third of the top 50 charities in the UK hire unpaid interns.

In addition to targeting employers, the government is launching a video and poster campaign to offer guidance to young would-be interns.
