Nine out of 10 Scottish graduates managed to secure a job or a place on a postgraduate course last year, according to new figures.

Scotland’s chief statistician has published a report revealing that 65% of higher education leavers had found graduate jobs or other forms of employment within six months, with an additional 19% continuing into further education.

Seventy-five per cent of Scottish university leavers in employment had secured graduate jobs in either managerial or professional occupations.

Gordon Maloney, NUS Scotland president, finds the figures encouraging, but acknowledges that the country has still a way to go to improving graduate job prospects.

‘We’ve welcomed the Scottish Government’s focus on youth employment, but the simple fact of the matter is that the problem isn’t that we have too many graduates, but that we simply have too few jobs. Investment in higher education, coupled with job creation, is a sure-fire way to grow the economy.’

He continued: ‘It’s vital that we recognise that it’s not something we can solve in isolation, and that business, universities and government are working together, and improving outcomes for graduates.’
