More than one million British workers could be on zero-hours contracts following a survey of 1,000 employers by The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
These findings have prompted the government to review the use of zero-hours contracts, as despite being a hired worker there is no guarantee of work or pay.
Peter Cheese, the chief executive of the CIPD, said: ‘Zero-hours contracts, used appropriately, can provide flexibility for employers and employees..however, for some this may be a significant disadvantage where they need more certainty in their working hours and earnings.’
Business Secretary, Vince Cable reinforced this concern: ‘While it’s important our workforce remains flexible, it is equally important that it is treated fairly.’
