The British Property Federation (BPF) has told a committee of MPs that empty shops on high streets should be converted for alternative use.

MPs were told that in order to save struggling high streets shops should be converted for other uses such as housing and community facilities such as doctors and dentist surgeries.

BPF chief executive Liz Peace also highlighted the damaging impact of business rates – both to retailers and landlords in the form of empty property rates.

Peace said ‘In terms of the bigger picture it needs to be considered whether a tax that exaggerates the advantages of internet retailers over the high street is fair at all.’
