The Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) released the results of their Summer Survey today.

The survey found that on average each graduate vacancy receives 85 applications. Stephen Irsherwood, the new AGR chief executive, said ‘With these results in mind, my message to students is do not despair; graduate employers are broadly hiring the same number of graduates as they did before the credit crunch hit. Be competitive and strategic in your approach to applications – and keep persevering.’

Despite a small predicted decrease of 4% in the number of available graduate vacancies, retailers, consulting and engineering firms, utilities and IT and telecoms companies are all recruiting more graduates. Consulting firms predicted the greatest increase of 36%, this rise in consulting vacancies could be attributed to an increase in client demand.

The survey also highlighted the importance of internships with 77% of recruiters now offering them and many going on to hire previous interns for graduate positions. However, it is worth noting that this is not the only route to securing a graduate job.
