A network of ‘National Colleges of Excellence’ is being proposed by Labour’s shadow education secretary, Stephen Twigg.

If Labour comes to power, Mr Twigg would like to establish a new breed of ‘elite’ institutions aimed at vocational skills rather than academic subjects.

The centres would boost the employability of the next generation of young people, teaching them vocational expertise in fields such as engineering and healthcare.

Mr Twigg said: ‘We have some of the best universities in the world. It is high time that we had some of the best vocational colleges in the world too.’

If you are deliberating about whether to go to university or not, read our advice for those that are still at school.
