The latest figures from the Engineering Council reveal a surge of interest in engineering.

Over the past few years a downward trend in the number of registered engineers has been observed. However in 2012 this leveled out revealing an increase in interest in the profession.

IMechE was particularly successful in attracting new members in 2012, registering record numbers of chartered engineers, incorporated engineers and engineering technicians.

Statistics show that the largest growth in new registrants in the last year was seen at a technician level with a 21.5% increase in the number of new EngTechs compared to 2011.

Over the past five years new EngTech registrations have increased by 132.3%. New incorporated engineer (IEng) and chartered engineer (CEng) registrations are also shown to be rising.
