Responding to recent reports regarding the rising demand for skilled IT professionals, computing giant Cisco will be launching an apprenticeship scheme to recruit hundreds of network technicians.

Participants in the programme can expect to receive Cisco network associate accreditation upon completion of their training.

Ian Foddering, chief technology officer at Cisco UK, said the firm will take on ‘a couple of hundred’ apprentices as a means of tackling the growing skills gap within the IT industry.

‘Our TechWatch report showed that recruitment and skills development is the priority for 46 per cent of large companies in the year ahead, up from just 20 per cent in 2011. Companies are finding it hard to recruit IT staff,’ he explained.
