In a new survey, nearly a fifth of UK businesses have voiced concerns that skills shortages will prevent growth in 2013.

The report by Grant Thornton found that 38% of UK firms feel that they aren’t recruiting the right people. A deficiency of technical skills was perceived to be the main reason for this.

40% of UK companies reported low volumes of applications, blaming a lack of work experience and qualifications necessary to fill their positions.

Scott Barnes, CEO of Grant Thornton UK LLP, suggests that businesses must develop their employees if they want to achieve growth.

He says: “While the number of people employed in the UK hit a record level in 2012, businesses are still finding it hard to recruit for roles requiring technical skills.”
