A study by PwC has found that UK businesses spent £814 million on Online Performance Marketing (OPM) activities in 2012, generating £9 billion in sales.
£8 billion of the sales were derived from affiliate marketing. This equates to an £11 return on every £1 spent.
The study reports that 3,000-4,000 advertisers were partnered with 10,000 publisher websites. These affiliations were responsible for 100 million transactions and the generation of 70 million leads.
OPM has experienced a 12% growth each year since 2008, and is now thought to be worth 7-9% of the UK digital marketing spend.
Affiliate marketing is becoming increasingly valued by UK businesses. Sky reports that the marketing tool accounts for 14% of their online sales.
