From next September, graduates who choose a career in teaching will need to complete maths and English tests before they can start training.
Plans to overhaul the the current teacher training system have been announced by the Department of Education with the aim of raising standards in the education system.
New verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning tests will be introduced and pass grades are to be raised to the equivalent of a GCSE grade B.
Currently English and maths tests are taken near to the end of teacher training courses and unlimited retakes are allowed. Under the new system the tests must be completed before training can commence and a maximum of two resits will be allowed.
