A team of Graduate civil engineers from the URS office in Belfast has won this year’s Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Communication Competition.

The competition is open to both graduate and student members of the ICE with less than seven years experience.

David Bell, David Dawson, David Leemon and Jonathan Bradshaw presented their consultation strategy and public information leaflet to judges alongside Arup Cardiff at the University of Birmingham.

This recent success means that a team from Northern Ireland has won this competition in each of the last three years.

The participating teams presented two different scenarios; the development of a bypass and the regeneration of a harbour.

Teams presented their solutions at fictional public consultation meetings where they were judged on their:

  • clarity in communication
  • coverage of issues raised in the scenario
  • target audience engagement including sincerity
  • professionalism and empathy conveyed
  • appropriate and effective distribution of roles between team members.
