London 2012 CIO Gerry Pennell has revealed that the IT supporting the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics was hit by cyber attacks every day during the Games.

Some attacks were automated and launched just before the Games began. Others were well organised and could have posed a serious threat.

Pennell admitted that there was one attack which was a particularly major cyber security assault.

Many of the attacks were easy to track as hackers used the Twitter hashtag #letthegamesbegin to discuss what they were planning.

Specialist staff at the Olympics Technology Operations Centre were put in place to ensure the Games and the official website were kept safe from cyber security threats.
