Transport Secretary Justine Greening has announced that there will be no delay in signing the new West Coast Main Line contract with FirstGroup.
There has been pressure from Virgin Rail, who currently run the line, and Labour to delay the decision until parliament returns.
Critics fear FirstGroup would not be able to afford the £5.5bn it was paying for the franchise, despite promises of improvements to the service.
Greening has said the contract is a ‘good deal for taxpayers’ and that had Virgin won the bid they would have been ‘perfectly happy with the process.’
