Chris

Why did you choose to do an internship?

Doing an internship with Goldman Sachs gave me first hand experience of the banking & investments industry, which helped me decide whether it was something which interested me. It is also the easiest way to secure a job in the firm after graduation.

What attracted you to your role? Did it tie in with your overall career plans?

I was interested in financial markets, and stock markets in particular, which made the job suitable for me.

What was the application process like – any advice?

I applied for a Spring Week in the previous year and received an internship offer after doing well that week. The application process involved several online tests and then interviews.

What were your main duties?

I helped the team with day to day tasks as well as carrying out a few longer term projects and group exercises with the other interns.

What were the most important things you learnt from the internship?

I gained an understanding of the industry, specific skills needed to succeed, general work experience and made valuable contacts with similar people within the industry.

What advice would you give to someone seeking an internship?

Do your research and prepare for the interviews. Don’t be discouraged if the your first few applications fail as the process is highly competitive and if you keep trying you will eventually get an offer!

What skills did you acquire or improve during the internship?

  • Analytical skills
  • Problem solving skills
  • Management skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Networking skills.

What further opportunities did your internship lead to?

As a result of my internship I was able to secure a training contract with Goldman Sachs. However, regardless of whether I got the offer, it gave me valuable experience which will help me in future applications. The relationship formed with fellow interns will also be useful.
