Why employers use personality tests

Personality questionnaires are standardised assessments used to identify key aspects of a person’s character, personal characteristics and personality traits.

Personality testing in selection or development provides valuable insights into candidates’ workplace preferences, behaviour and level of competence, helping organisations make objective selection/development decisions.

Personality questionnaires are used at every level of recruitment, however they are used increasingly with career seniority and high-stakes recruitment.

How difficult are personality tests?

Personality tests will very rarely use time limits and will have no strict ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers. Therefore, compared to aptitude testing and competency based interviewing, personality questionnaires are a welcome break from high pressure selection procedures.

However, do not allow yourself to be lulled into a false sense of security; personality questionnaires will require considered introspection, and although there are no incorrect answers, your personality profile will be compared against a competency framework in order to assess your compatibility or fit for a particular role.
