Methods of Applying

First impressions count. Never underestimate the overused expression, because when it comes to making it to the interview stage, the only way to make it will be through a well-thought out, word perfect application.

The application process varies from company to company but the most common methods are through:

  • Written application - often with a CV.
  • By completing an application form- online or paper method
  • Over the telephone.

Written applications
Still a common form to approach an employer is to apply through a standard application form which you fill in (have your CV ready) with your work experience to date. Some companies leave blank spaces for you to demonstrate your flair and individuality. Use this opportunity to impress the employer.

When answering questions, provide examples from any part-time jobs, voluntary work, clubs and societies you have been involved with during university. Shine out by showing the employer the range of skills you can bring to the company.

Online applications
With the traditional paper application fading into the past, online applications are becoming popular. Taking the same amount of care as you would with a paper application is paramount. Once you log onto a form, check the questions they are asking and familiarise yourself with how to navigate around the form. Bear in mind computers can crash so saving information in advance is essential and can save you time.
