Read Mathys & Squire LLP Profile

Trainee Profile

After graduating from Cambridge with a degree in Pharmacology, I was looking for a job which would keep me in close contact with the science that I enjoyed, but not confine me to a laboratory or academia. Becoming a patent attorney sounded like the perfect fit. I joined Mathys & Squire because the people I met at interview painted a picture of a firm with a strong culture of excellence and achievement within a friendly and supportive working environment.

I work under the direct supervision of one of our partners and from the very start I have had personal responsibility for cases and clients. I have been involved in all stages of patent prosecution from drafting applications to responding to issues raised by various patent offices around the world. I have also met clients, both big and small, to discuss the best methods of protecting their inventions.

The firm is very friendly and there are always lots of people to ask if I have a question – one of the things that drew me to the firm was the strong emphasis placed on training and the support provided to allow me to achieve. Away from work we have a very active social committee that organises annual Christmas and summer parties, pub quizzes, and plenty of trips to the pub. We take part in the various sporting activities arranged by CIPA and are always looking for people to strengthen our teams!
