Employer Profile

We believe that Red Gate offers the best graduate careers for anyone not wanting to be a diving instructor in the Maldives. We’re in The Sunday Times Top 100 Small Companies to Work For list for the fifth year running. In fact, there’s no higher ranked small Software Development Company in Cambridge. Our software has won lots of awards and is used by over 500,000 customers globally. We’re successful, growing steadily and renowned as a great place to work.

Our culture is relaxed, informal and fun. We avoid office politics and red tape and believe in open discussions and the free flow of ideas. Whatever part of the company you work in you’ll be part of a small team with the freedom and flexibility to try new things. Every few months we have a ‘Down Tools Week’ where you can work on whatever you want, with whoever you want, for a whole week. We offer an awesome working environment with all the tools and technology you’ll need to make your mark.

What roles are available?

We usually have vacancies for technical graduates in software development, software testing, user experience, IT and product support, and also for humanities graduates in marketing and technical communications. We often have software and marketing internships in the summer.

Red Gate’s philosophy is all about ‘simple. We make ingeniously simple tools that are simple to use and simple to buy. Simplicity extends to our recruitment process too. There are no application forms or assessment centres here. We just need your CV and a covering letter. You’ll interview with people doing the same job as you – ask them anything you like!

What does Red Gate Software look for in candidates?

We look for people with at least a 2:1 and some roles require a specific degree subject (Computer Science for software engineering and HCI for usability, for example). We’re always interested to hear about extra curricular activities that you’ve been involved in, whether it’s open source programming, running a marathon or travelling the world. Above all, we’re looking for smart people who want to work with other smart people.

We’ll challenge you and invest in your personal and professional development. Depending on your role, you could attend international trade shows or conferences. You’ll work with amazing people who are experts at what they do; you’ll learn from them and they’ll learn from you. Because we’re a growing and successful company, the sky’s the limit for your career development.

What makes Red Gate Software stand out from other employers?

When you join Red Gate you’ll be doing a real job from day one. We don’t have long graduate induction or rotation schemes. We offer an excellent financial and benefits package including a £2,000 signing bonus, 25 days holiday, a six week paid sabbatical every five years, income protection cover, BUPA health and travel, free social events, free office based massages, office based haircutting, local gym discounts and local travel discounts. We don’t have a dress code and we give away free t-shirts and hoodies meaning you won’t spend every morning ironing shirts.

It’s not just the benefits package, the cool office, the free lunch or the career development that makes Red Gate a great place to work; it’s our culture and our people.
