Employer Profile

If you’re ambitious, intellectually curious and would like to work towards your actuarial qualifications in the company of like-minded people, you’ll find them at Hymans Robertson.

Hymans Robertson is the UK’s leading independently owned investment and benefits consultancy, and one of the fastest growing, employing 500 people across our London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh offices. We value our independence because it allows us to be agile and responsive to our clients’ needs. It also means we are able to give our actuarial trainees greater responsibility from the start.

At Hymans Robertson we continue to enjoy strong growth thanks to our innovative, client focused approach, while the quality of our work has been recognised by numerous industry awards, including the 2009 UK Pensions Award for ‘Actuarial Consultancy of the Year’ and ‘Investment Consultant of the Year’ at the FT Pension and Investment Provider Awards.

We are proud to be recognised for the quality of our work, but equally proud to be recognised as a top employer, having recently been awarded a one Star rating by Best Companies, the company behind The Sunday Times Best Companies to Work for List. This award is particularly special to us as it is voted for by our own employees. At Hymans Robertson we feel that being a best company goes beyond the bottom line. It’s about excelling in every area throughout the workplace and demonstrates our commitment to what we see as our most important asset – our people.

Our core services include actuarial and investment consultancy, financial and risk management, benefits strategy and design, communications and engagement and third party administration – we advise many of the country’s biggest pension schemes and provide consultancy services to some of the UK’s leading organisations, including FTSE 100 and public sector organisations. We continually seek innovative, practical and bespoke solutions for our clients, making use of sophisticated quantitative analysis and modelling tools to supplement our broad market knowledge and expert consulting skills.

Why Hymans Robertson?

Real people
We operate as a specialist consultancy with a strong people centred culture. Put simply, our people are the key to our success and we dedicate time and attention to recruiting and developing the very best.

We are looking for highly talented people who want to push themselves to achieve their full potential. In return, we will make sure you have the resources, support and opportunities to succeed.

If you join the firm, you will immediately see how our culture is one of wanting everyone to do well. It really is about teamwork and you will be actively encouraged to take on new challenges and to get involved in client work from an early stage. You’ll be working alongside some of the sharpest minds in the profession – including the partners who own the firm.

Real skills
Becoming an actuarial consultant will provide you with an array of skills you simply won’t find in any other profession.

You will be trained in economics, probability, statistics, financial mathematics and more, and then given the opportunity to apply these skills in the business community.

It’s not all about technical knowledge. We will spend time helping you develop your communication and problem solving skills as well as your commercial awareness.

In all aspects of your development you can count on our support. We will provide you with an excellent study package as well as extensive in-house training and coaching. Everything is focused on giving you a fully-rounded understanding of our industry so that you can fulfil your potential and really make your mark.

Real opportunities
The fact that Hymans Robertson continues to grow rapidly is down to two factors: the quality of our people and the excellence of the advice they give. What our clients are buying into is our ability to find the right answers for them, backed by technical accuracy and clear reasoning, which is why the people we recruit have to be able to think creatively and develop practical solutions.

Our unwavering commitment to support our trainees is reflected by an excellent exam pass rate and the career development of our employees. Many of our partners have built their careers with us and as a trainee your future prospects will be limited only by your ambition and ability.

Our key requirements
Our minimum academic requirements are a 2.1 Honours degree in a discipline that provides for a solid foundation in maths, coupled with strong A level, ‘Higher’ or equivalent results, including a grade A in mathematics. We are particularly keen to receive applications from candidates with additional postgraduate qualifications or work experience.

Our current trainees come from a variety of academic backgrounds ranging from those with a PhD in mathematics or physics, to those with undergraduate degrees in economics, aeronautics, engineering and statistics.

Academic ability isn’t all we’re looking for. To be a successful consultant we need people who can analyse an issue from a technical perspective, devise a creative, practical and coherent solution and help our clients understand and feel comfortable with our proposals. We also need people who have the drive and determination to succeed in their career. If this sounds like you then we would love to hear from you.

In return Hymans Robertson offers a highly competitive salary and flexible benefits package, coupled with a superb working environment and genuine career opportunities within the firm.
