Trainee chartered accountant
The Job
A graduate training contract at Saffery Champness is an amazing opportunity to learn about a variety of businesses and gain an excellent business qualification with a UK-wide top 20 accountancy firm that has consistently won accreditation as being among the country’s top employers and an Investor in People.
Exams / study
Graduate trainees begin studying for their first ACA exams as soon as they join.
You need to be prepared to invest a lot of time in studying if you're determined to pass first time. That said, there’s a lot of support within the firm to ensure you have the best chance of passing. Additional training is provided to help you translate your studies into practical experience and check that you understand all technical aspects of the job. Study leave is provided for the training courses but evening and weekend study will also be needed.
Work variety
When not studying, a trainee will spend approximate 70% of their time on audit assignments and the remainder providing other services to clients. Each audit assignment will last between 1 and 3 weeks and, as a junior trainee, most of your time will be spent at clients’ premises. In your first year of training you will work on a variety of clients and in the first six months could be working on assignments involving anything from wealthy individuals to recruitment consultants, charities, media companies or family-owned businesses. Trainees are encouraged to gain as wide a variety of experience as possible.
The Person
We look for enthusiastic people who have chosen accountancy as they are interested in the work they will be doing.
A relevant degree is not always an advantage, it’s far more important to be outgoing and comfortable talking to people as that is what the role involves on a day to day basis.
Strong numerical and verbal reasoning skills are important.
Most importantly, self-organisation - getting used to working full time and studying in the evenings is often the hardest thing to get used to.
